Concurrent Training: How to Build Strength and Endurance at the Same Time
Lifting and running in the same week is not a compromise — it is a scheduling problem. What the research says about sequencing, volume and recovery, and how to turn it into a week you can actually run.

For most of the last thirty years, the answer to "should I lift and run at the same time?" was no. Pick one. The other will suffer.
That advice came from real research, and it was reasonable for the athletes it was studying — mostly collegiate populations doing very high volumes of both. It has since been repeated so often, by so many people who never read the original work, that it hardened into gym-floor law: cardio kills gains.
The more useful version of the finding is this. Interference between strength and endurance training is real, it is dose-dependent, and almost everything about whether it happens to you comes down to variables you control. Modality. Volume. Proximity. Food.
Which means concurrent training is not really a physiology problem. It is a scheduling problem.
What concurrent training actually means
Concurrent training is any programme that develops strength and aerobic capacity in the same block, rather than periodising them into separate phases. If you lift three times a week and run three times a week, you are a concurrent athlete whether or not you use the word.
The reason it gets its own name is that the two adaptations are, at the cellular level, pulling in different directions. Resistance training signals for protein synthesis and larger, stronger fibres. Endurance training signals for mitochondrial density and metabolic efficiency — adaptations that favour smaller, more oxidative fibres. Run both signals hard enough, close enough together, and the second can blunt the first.
That is the mechanism. What matters far more is the dose.
The interference effect, honestly
The widely cited 2012 meta-analysis on concurrent training found something more nuanced than "cardio kills gains". It found that interference:
- was largest for power and explosive strength, smaller for maximal strength, and smallest of all for aerobic development — endurance is barely affected by lifting at all
- scaled with endurance frequency and duration — the more you ran, and the longer each run, the larger the effect
- was substantially worse for running than for cycling
That last point is the one people miss. Running interferes more than cycling not primarily because of the cardiovascular demand but because of the eccentric loading. Every stride is a small controlled landing, and thousands of them create muscle damage and residual fatigue that a bike ride simply does not.
This gives you a practical hierarchy.

If your event is a running event, you run. Nobody gets to swap to a bike because it is metabolically convenient. But when you are adding aerobic work for general fitness or health, choosing a low-impact modality removes most of the conflict for free.
The four variables that decide your outcome
1. Proximity
This is the single biggest lever, and the cheapest to fix.
Running immediately before a heavy lift meaningfully reduces the load you can move and the quality of the session. Lifting heavy immediately before a hard run does the same in reverse. Six hours of separation is the figure most often used as a working minimum. A full day is better.
If both must happen in one session, the order should follow the priority: whichever quality you are actually trying to improve goes first, when you are fresh. And the least disruptive combination by a wide margin is heavy lifting followed by easy aerobic work. The most disruptive is hard intervals followed by heavy lifting.
2. Volume
Interference is not a switch, it is a slope. Two or three runs a week alongside three lifting sessions produces very little measurable conflict in most people. Six runs and 300+ minutes of weekly endurance work alongside a hypertrophy programme produces a lot.
If your endurance volume is climbing — a marathon build, a HYROX block, a race approaching — expect the trade-off and plan for it rather than being surprised by it.
3. What you cut when volume rises
Here is where most people get it exactly backwards.
When running volume goes up, the instinct is to drop the weight on the bar and keep the sets, on the theory that lighter work is easier to recover from. In practice this is the worst of both worlds: you accumulate fatigue from the volume and lose the heavy stimulus that was maintaining your strength.
Cut volume. Keep intensity. Two heavy sets of five at a load you respect will maintain strength through a long endurance block far better than four sets of twelve at 60%. Strength is remarkably cheap to maintain and expensive to build — during a running block, you are only trying to maintain.
4. Food
The most common cause of lost strength during an endurance block is not the interference effect. It is that the athlete added five hours of running per week and did not add any food.
A body in a meaningful energy deficit will not build muscle regardless of how elegantly you sequence your sessions. Carbohydrate is the lever that moves most — endurance athletes in heavy blocks commonly sit in the range of 5 to 8 grams per kilogram of bodyweight on high-volume days — with protein around 1.6 to 2.2 g/kg to protect the strength side.

Three weeks that work
The templates below assume a moderately trained athlete. Adjust down before you adjust up.
Four days, strength-biased. Aerobic work is maintenance; the goal is getting stronger.

Notice what all three have in common: the hard run never sits the day before heavy lower-body work, and the heavy lower-body session never sits the day before the long run. That single rule solves most scheduling problems by itself.

What to expect
If you are new to one or both qualities, you will improve at both for a long time. Beginner adaptations are large, fast and mostly independent — there is no meaningful trade-off to manage in your first year.
If you are already well trained in one, expect the other to progress and the trained quality to hold or improve slightly. That is not a failure. Holding a hard-won squat while adding a 40-minute improvement to your half marathon is a very good year.
And if you are chasing a genuine peak in one — a powerlifting meet, a marathon PB — then for eight to twelve weeks around that event, stop being a hybrid athlete. Specialise, hit the goal, and come back.
