Overtraining vs. Under-Recovering: How to Tell the Difference
True overtraining syndrome is rare and takes months to fix. What most athletes have is a recovery deficit that resolves in ten days. The markers that separate them, and why misdiagnosing it costs you a season.

"I think I'm overtrained" is one of the most common things a coach hears, and it is almost always wrong.
Not because the person feels fine — they usually feel genuinely terrible. But because overtraining syndrome is a specific clinical condition that takes months of sustained excessive load to produce and months of near-complete rest to resolve, and what most people have is a recovery deficit that a good week fixes.
The distinction matters enormously, because the treatments are wildly different in cost.
The three states
Functional overreaching. You train hard for two to four weeks, performance temporarily dips, you back off, and you come back stronger than before. This is not a problem — it is the mechanism by which training works. Feeling flat at the end of a hard block is the plan executing correctly.
Recovery: days to a week.
Non-functional overreaching. You pushed past the useful point. Performance is down, motivation is down, and the extra work is not buying anything. You need more than a couple of easy days, but you are not in trouble.
Recovery: one to four weeks of reduced load.
Overtraining syndrome. A genuine clinical syndrome involving persistent underperformance despite prolonged rest, often with endocrine, immune and mood disruption. Rare outside of elite sport, and rarely caused by training alone — it usually requires months of high load plus chronic under-fuelling, poor sleep and significant life stress stacked together.
Recovery: months. Sometimes a season.
Most people asking the question are in the first or second state. Almost nobody reading this is in the third.
The one test that separates them
Take an easy week and see what happens.
Cut volume by roughly a third to a half, keep some intensity so you do not go stale, sleep as much as you can, and eat properly. Then look:
- You feel dramatically better within a few days → functional overreaching. Working as intended.
- You feel better within two weeks → non-functional overreaching. Take the message about volume.
- Two weeks of genuine rest changes nothing → this is the point to see a doctor, because it is either overtraining syndrome or something that is not training at all.
That last point matters. Persistent fatigue unresponsive to rest has a long list of medical causes — anaemia, thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency (particularly common in female endurance athletes), vitamin D deficiency, undiagnosed infection. Attributing it to training and simply resting longer can delay a diagnosis that a blood test would have made in a week.
The markers worth tracking
None of these mean anything in isolation. The pattern across several, over a week or more, is the signal.

What actually causes it
Here is the part that surprises people: in most cases, the problem is not training volume.
Under-eating is the most common single cause. An athlete adds five hours of training a week and does not add food. The training load is fine; the energy available to recover from it is not. This is a large enough phenomenon in sport to have its own name — low energy availability — and its consequences go well beyond feeling tired.
Sleep debt is second. Six hours a night through a hard block will produce every symptom in the table above, entirely independent of how well the training is programmed.
Life stress is third and most underrated. Your body does not maintain separate accounts for work stress and training stress. A brutal quarter at work is a real load, and a training plan that was appropriate in January may be too much in March for reasons that have nothing to do with training.
Actual excessive volume comes fourth, and is genuinely the least common of the four in recreational athletes.
Which suggests the diagnostic order: before you cut your training, check whether you are eating and sleeping.
What to do
If the pattern is one to three days: nothing. Train as planned, modify intensity if the warm-up feels bad. See what to do when your watch says recovery is low.
If the pattern is a week: take a deload. Cut volume by a third, keep intensity brief and sharp, protect sleep, eat at or slightly above maintenance. Reassess in seven days.
If two weeks of that changes nothing: stop guessing and get bloods done. Ferritin, full blood count, thyroid, vitamin D. This is the point where continuing to self-manage costs you more than the appointment.
If it is genuinely overtraining syndrome: the treatment is extended rest under medical guidance, and the timeline is months. Which is precisely why getting this diagnosis right matters — the cost of unnecessarily treating overreaching as overtraining is an entire wasted season.
The reframe
Most athletes are not doing too much. They are doing a reasonable amount while sleeping six hours, eating for a smaller version of themselves, and carrying a job that is quietly consuming the same recovery capacity as a fourth training session.
Fix those before you cut the training. The training is usually the part that was working.
