What a Good HYROX Time Actually Is: Benchmarks by Age and Division

Finishing times, age group percentiles and elite comparisons, plus the more useful question nobody asks: which of your splits is furthest from where it should be, and what that tells you to train.

"What is a good time?" is the first question everyone asks and close to the least useful one, because the answer depends on your division, your age group, the venue, the sled friction on the day, and whether you had raced before.

Here is a realistic picture, followed by the question that will actually make you faster.

One caveat that matters more here than in most articles: HYROX divisions, weights, rep counts, field sizes and qualification criteria change between seasons, and the sport is growing fast enough that the distribution shifts year to year. The broad picture

For the open division, finishers cluster roughly like this:

The middle of a typical open field sits somewhere around 90 minutes, moving with the event and the division.

Sub-90 is a genuinely good open-division result. Most first-timers do not hit it, and hitting it generally means your compromised running is real rather than theoretical.

On age groups

Times rise with age, but considerably less sharply than most people assume, and the masters fields are competitive deep into the 50s and 60s.

The reason is structural: HYROX rewards aerobic base, pacing discipline and station efficiency far more than explosive power. Those are the qualities that hold up best with age and improve most with experience. A 52-year-old with eight years of consistent training and a rehearsed pacing plan routinely beats a 28-year-old who went out too fast.

Compare yourself within your own age group and division. The overall field is a mix of divisions and abilities, and measuring against it produces a number that means very little.

The question that actually helps

Here is the shift worth making. Your finish time tells you almost nothing about what to train. Your splits tell you everything.

Every result gives you eight run splits, eight station times and a roxzone total. That is a detailed diagnostic report on your fitness, and most people look at it once, note the total, and never open it again.

Step 1: compare your run splits to your fresh 5K pace

Take your fresh 5K pace per kilometre and compare it to your average race kilometre.

  • 30 to 45 seconds slower: your compromised running is well trained. Your limiter is elsewhere.
  • 60 to 90 seconds slower: this is your biggest available gain, comfortably.
  • 90+ seconds slower, or you walked: this is the only thing worth training this block.

That gap is the single most informative number in your results, and closing it is a known training problem with a known solution — laid out in compromised running.

Step 2: find the run that fell apart

Look at your eight run splits in order. Almost everyone has a specific collapse point.

  • Runs 3 and 4 much slower than the rest → you attacked the sleds. A pacing problem, not a fitness problem, and the cheapest fix available.
  • A steady decline across all eight → aerobic base. You need easy volume, not more intervals.
  • Only run 8 slower → that is fine. Everyone's run 8 is slower.
  • Run 1 your fastest by a margin → you went out too hard, which cost you more later than it gained you early.

Step 3: check your roxzone

Total roxzone time is the most-ignored and most-fixable number in the results.

Over 5 minutes means you are standing still after stations. That is three or four minutes available for free, in one race, with no fitness change required — it is purely a habit of walking with purpose instead of stopping to breathe. The full treatment is in HYROX pacing strategy.

Step 4: find your worst station relative to the rest

Not your slowest station in absolute terms — wall balls are slow for everyone. Compare each of your station times against the target band for the finish time you want. Usually one or two stand out, and that is where a block of specific work pays.

What the diagnosis usually says

Run this on enough results and the pattern is consistent. For amateur athletes, in order of frequency:

  1. Compromised running gap too large — the dominant limiter, by a wide margin
  2. Sled pacing — attacked, costing two runs
  3. Roxzone waste — three to five minutes given away
  4. A single weak station — usually sled pull or burpee broad jumps
  5. Genuine aerobic base deficit — the honest answer for a lot of strength-background athletes

Notice that four of those five are not "get fitter". They are pacing, technique and habit. Which is why athletes routinely take five to eight minutes off a time in one race without any change in fitness — they simply executed the second one properly.

The number to actually set

Not an aspiration. Arithmetic:

(your measured compromised pace × 8) + your station times + roxzone

Measure the first term rather than guessing it. Add your realistic station times from training. Add three or four minutes of transitions. That is your race, and it is a target you can defend at kilometre five when everyone around you is going faster than they should.

The honest framing

A good HYROX time is one that is faster than your last one, for reasons you understand.

The athlete who went 104 to 96 by fixing their sled pacing learned more and is progressing faster than the athlete who went 88 to 87 by trying harder. And the person who finished at 118 having never raced anything has done something most people never do.

Set the benchmark against your own previous splits. The field will be there regardless, and it will keep getting faster, which is a poor thing to measure yourself against and a very good thing for the sport.
