A 90-minute run creates a considerably bigger hole than a 60-minute lifting session, and glycogen depletion in particular appears to be a strong driver of subsequent carbohydrate appetite.
Resistance training produces less acute hunger but raises protein requirements and creates a repair demand that persists for a day or two.
A hybrid athlete gets both, which is why people who add a discipline are so often blindsided by their appetite. The training load rose by more than they estimated, and the hunger arrived a week later, apparently unprovoked.
When hunger means you are under-eating
Worth naming clearly, because this is the most common case and the one most often treated as a willpower problem.
Persistent, intrusive, difficult-to-ignore hunger usually means you are in a larger energy deficit than you think.
The mechanism is unglamorous. Athletes add training volume and do not add food, because the training feels like the achievement and eating feels like the indulgence. The body responds by escalating hunger signalling, and it escalates until it wins — usually in the evening, usually not with vegetables.
The tell is the pattern: controlled all day, uncontrollable at night. That is not a character trait. That is a body that did not get enough at breakfast and lunch, and is now collecting.

Four levers, in rough order of effect.

2. Total energy. If you are genuinely under-eating, nothing else on this list will fix it. This is the lever people avoid and the one that usually matters.
3. Fibre and food volume. Whole foods with volume — vegetables, fruit, legumes, whole grains — occupy the stomach and slow gastric emptying. A 600-calorie meal of whole foods is vastly more filling than a 600-calorie meal that fits in a glass. The exception is the 24 hours before a race, when fibre becomes a liability rather than an asset.
4. Meal distribution. Front-loading matters. Eating substantially at breakfast and lunch prevents the evening collapse; skipping them guarantees it.
A structure that works
Eat before the hunger, not in response to it. Because appetite lags, reacting to it means you are always a day behind.
On hard training days:
