Zátopek and the Invention of Interval Training
The most famous distance runner of his era trained in a way that looked, to his contemporaries, like self-harm. What his sessions actually consisted of, where the interval idea came from, and which parts of it modern coaching kept.

Emil Zátopek's contemporaries did not think he was clever. They thought he was doing something faintly self-destructive that happened to be working.
He looked terrible while running — head rolling, face contorted, described in reports of the time as a man being strangled. And he trained in a way that made no sense to anyone watching: not faster than his rivals, but very much more.
What came before
Interval training was not Zátopek's invention, and it is worth getting the lineage right.
Structured repeated efforts developed across European coaching in the first half of the twentieth century, along two distinct lines.
The German line. The coach Woldemar Gerschler, working with the physiologist Herbert Reindell, formalised a system in the 1930s built around a specific physiological idea: that the adaptation occurred during the recovery, as the heart refilled and stroke volume increased. Their approach used heart rate to determine when the next repetition began — you started again once your pulse had dropped to a target figure.
That is a genuinely important idea, and it is why the method is called interval training. The interval is the point. The running between the intervals is what makes them possible.
The Swedish line. Fartlek — "speed play" — developed as a deliberately unstructured alternative, with efforts run by feel over varied terrain rather than to a stopwatch. It is a different philosophy from the same era, covered in fartlek.
Zátopek inherited the German idea and did something nobody expected with it.
What he actually did
The distinguishing feature of his training was volume of repetitions, not the speed of any one of them.
Where a contemporary might run ten or fifteen repetitions, Zátopek would run many times that number, with jogged recoveries, day after day. The sessions were long enough that the arithmetic alone is startling, and he did them year-round rather than in blocks.
Two details matter more than the raw numbers, which vary between accounts and have grown in the retelling.
The repetitions were not maximal. They could not have been — nobody completes that volume at maximum effort. They were controlled, repeatable efforts at a pace he could sustain across an enormous number of reps.
The recoveries were run, not rested. He jogged between repetitions rather than standing. Which means the session was not really a set of sprints with breaks; it was a very long continuous aerobic session with faster segments embedded in it.
Put those together and what looks like an extreme interval workout is, functionally, an extremely high-volume aerobic session. He was building a base while everyone thought he was doing speed work.
The folklore
Zátopek attracts stories: running in army boots, running on the spot in his home for hours, running while carrying his wife. Some of these have documentary support, some are embellishment, and by now the two are difficult to separate.
This is worth flagging rather than repeating uncritically. Athletic folklore accretes, and the more remarkable the athlete, the faster it accretes. The genuinely documented and genuinely remarkable thing is the training volume and its consistency, which needs no embellishment.
What modern coaching kept
Kept: the structure. Repeated efforts with controlled recoveries remain a core session type in every endurance sport.
Kept: the recovery insight. Gerschler and Reindell's observation that the recovery matters — that jogging rather than standing changes the session — survives in modern practice, where recovery duration and intensity are prescribed deliberately.
Kept: repeatability over heroics. The best interval sessions are ones where the last repetition resembles the first. That principle, which is what allowed Zátopek's volume in the first place, is now standard coaching.
Dropped: the volume. Drastically. Modern athletes do a fraction of those repetition counts, and are generally faster over the same distances. Which tells you something important — that Zátopek succeeded partly despite the extremity of the method, on the strength of the aerobic volume it delivered, and that the same aerobic development can be achieved more efficiently.
Dropped: the year-round intensity. Modern periodisation cycles between base, build and peak rather than doing the same thing continuously, on the basis that the varied stimulus produces better results with less accumulated damage.
The transferable lesson
Not the volume. Nobody should copy the volume.
The lesson is that controlled, repeatable, specific efforts beat occasional heroic ones.
Zátopek's repetitions were not impressive individually. That was the design. He could do an extraordinary number of them precisely because none of them was maximal, and the accumulated total was what produced the fitness.
The amateur version of this error runs the other way: one brutal session a week that leaves you wrecked for three days, and nothing much else. Total quality work accumulated over the week is what drives adaptation, and it is maximised by sessions you can repeat — the same principle that underpins the modern approach in the Norwegian method, arrived at from an entirely different direction seventy years later.
Two of the most successful endurance training systems in history, separated by decades and philosophy, converge on the same instruction: do slightly less than you could, considerably more often.
The postscript
Zátopek won an extraordinary set of titles, including a famous Olympic treble in which he added the marathon almost as an afterthought and won it having never raced the distance before.
That last detail is the one that best captures what the training actually built. It was not a specialist's peak. It was an aerobic base so large that a new event, at a distance he had never contested, was within reach on the day.
Nobody now trains the way he did. But the thing his training was accidentally optimised for — an enormous, durable aerobic engine — is exactly what modern endurance coaching still spends most of its effort building.
