Lydiard and the 100-Mile Week: What Survived Sixty Years of Scrutiny

Aerobic base building was radical when Lydiard proposed it and is orthodoxy now. What his system actually prescribed, which parts the evidence has supported, and which parts get quoted far past what he meant.

In the 1950s, a coach working with a small group of runners in Auckland proposed something that sounded, to most of the athletics world, backwards: that middle-distance runners should spend months running enormous distances slowly, well away from race pace, and only sharpen in the final weeks.

Middle-distance runners at the time trained by running fast, repeatedly, more or less all year. Arthur Lydiard's athletes went to the Rome Olympics and won the 800 m and the 5000 m.

What the system actually was

The popular version of Lydiard is "run a lot". The actual system was a sequenced structure, and the sequence was the point.

Phase 1 — Aerobic base. Months of high-volume running, largely at what he called best aerobic effort: as fast as could be sustained without going into oxygen debt. This was the phase associated with the famous 100-mile weeks, and it was the longest phase by a wide margin.

Phase 2 — Hill resistance. Weeks of specific hill work — springing, bounding, steep running — to develop strength and power before any track work began. This phase is nearly always dropped from summaries of his method and he regarded it as essential. The general case for hills is in hill training.

Phase 3 — Anaerobic development. Track intervals, hard, for a comparatively short block. Lydiard's argument was that anaerobic capacity develops quickly and cannot be held for long, so it should be applied late and briefly rather than pursued year-round.

Phase 4 — Coordination and sharpening. Race-pace work, time trials, refinement.

Phase 5 — Peaking and taper. Freshening for the target race.

The organising insight: the aerobic base sets the ceiling for everything above it. Anaerobic work does not build fitness so much as convert existing fitness into race performance, and it has a shelf life.

The most misquoted number in running

"100 miles a week" is what survived, and it is the part that survived worst.

It described one phase, of one system, for athletes whose full-time occupation was running. It was never a threshold, a badge, or a requirement for anyone else. Lydiard himself scaled it to the athlete in practice.

What the number really encoded was a principle: the base phase should be as much aerobic running as you can absorb and repeat. For an elite New Zealander in 1960 that was around a hundred miles. For someone with a job, a commute and two lifting sessions a week, it is a very different figure and the principle is unchanged.

The failure mode created by the misquote is entirely predictable. Runners target the number, arrive at it too fast, and get injured — because tissue adapts on its own timeline regardless of enthusiasm, a mismatch explained in tendons adapt slower than muscle.

The other misquote: how fast the base was

There are two opposite misreadings of Lydiard's base phase, and both are common.

The first is that it was all very slow jogging. The second is that "best aerobic effort" meant running hard every day.

Neither is right. His base running was brisk — genuinely aerobic, sustainable, conversational at the easier end, but not a shuffle. He was explicit that it should be run at a good effort while staying below the point of laboured breathing.

The modern polarised approach, where a large majority of running is genuinely easy and a small minority is hard, is not quite what Lydiard prescribed. His distribution sat somewhat more in the middle. This is one of the places where sixty years of evidence has modified rather than confirmed him — the case for making the easy running genuinely easy is in why Kenyan runners jog so slowly.

What has held up

Aerobic base determines the ceiling. Comprehensively supported. Endurance performance rests on aerobic development, and no amount of interval work substitutes for it.

Periodisation. Nearly universal now. Base, build, peak, taper is the shape of almost every endurance plan written today.

Anaerobic work is a short overlay. Also supported. High-intensity fitness comes quickly, plateaus, and cannot be maintained indefinitely without cost. This is why programmes cycle it rather than running intervals year-round.

Consistency over heroics. Train, don't strain — his most quoted line and his least followed one. The idea that a session should leave you able to train again tomorrow is the same principle that made Zátopek's enormous repetition volumes possible, and the same one underpinning the modern Norwegian method.

Three of the most influential endurance systems in history, developed independently across seventy years, all converge on: do work you can repeat.

What has been revised

The intensity distribution. Current evidence supports a more polarised model than Lydiard's, with more genuinely easy running and a clearer separation between easy and hard.

Volume for ordinary runners. Lydiard's numbers were for elite athletes. The research on non-elite runners suggests substantial benefit at much lower volumes, with injury risk climbing as volume rises faster than tissue tolerance.

Strength training. Essentially absent from his system, and now one of the better-evidenced interventions in distance running — see running economy.

Hill springing specifically. His bounding drills were demanding and injury-prone in inexperienced hands. Modern practice generally prefers hill sprints and gym-based strength work for the same qualities.

What a hybrid athlete can take from it

You are not going to run 100 miles a week, and Lydiard would not have suggested it for someone who also lifts.

The transferable structure:

  • Spend most of the year building aerobic base, at whatever volume you can sustain consistently — 40 to 60 km a week is a real base for most people with jobs
  • Do not do hard intervals year-round. Concentrate them in a block of six to ten weeks before a target event
  • Put strength and hill work before the track work, which is roughly where his resistance phase sat and happens to fit a hybrid week well
  • Sharpen late, and taper
  • Judge sessions by whether you could repeat them tomorrow, not by how destroyed you feel

The last one is the whole thing. It is why athletes on far less impressive-sounding training beat athletes who train harder and less often.

The postscript

Lydiard was not a physiologist. He was a shoemaker who experimented on himself for years, running enormous distances to find out what happened, and then applied what he learned to a handful of neighbours in a suburb of Auckland.

Those neighbours won Olympic medals. The system spread to Finland, to Japan, and eventually to essentially everyone.

There is something clarifying about that. The most influential endurance training system of the twentieth century came from someone with no laboratory, no funding, and a willingness to test things on himself for a decade. The physiology arrived afterwards to explain why it worked — which, as with 10,000 steps and a great deal else in this sport, is the usual order of events.
